4H - 100 Years of Youth Development
Florida 4-H in 2009 is celebrating one-hundred years of youth development. To commemorate this milestone the Florida 4-H Foundation has published a book; Florida 4-H: a Century of Youth Success. This beautiful hardbound book features 208 pages of historical facts and photographs. Each county 4-H program is featured in this book as well as camping programs and the Florida 4-H Hall of Fame.
As part of the University of Florida land grant mission, the Cooperative Extension Service is in every county in Florida; and 4-H is the youth development organization of Cooperative Extension Service. Since 1909, the Florida 4-H program has impacted the lives of youth through lifelong learning, leadership skills, and self-confidence. What began as a program as a program to teach new farming techniques became a community-based educational program that teaches young people how to learn by doing and become engaged citizens.
Here in Citrus County we have been able to trace Extension and 4-H back to 1915 and the 20's with records of Walter E Allen, the "Farm Demonstration Agent" and Elizabeth Moore, "Home Demonstration Agent." In our county's pages we quote numerous people that were each 4-H'ers as youth, as far back as 1936. Then their children became involved and eventually grandchildren and so on. 4-H in Citrus County is a family tradition that continues today.
Florida 4-H: a Century of Youth Success books are on sale now at the Citrus County Extension/4-H Office. A limited number of books are available for $50.00, once these are gone the price increases to purchase additional books.
