Volunteer Opportunities

Citrus County Home Delivered Meals Program provides food to over 400 homebound seniors each week. 20% to 30% of these clients have companion animals. These pets are the only family many of our clients have left. These animals provide unfaltering companionship to a senior who may feel completely alone.

Citrus County is dedicated to helping seniors maintain their independence and quality of life for as long as possible. It was discovered that our clients were frequently sharing the food provided by the Home Delivered Meals Program with their beloved pets. Other clients were spending their already limited resources on expensive pet food, often doing without medications and other items that they themselves needed. This compromised the nutrition, health, and safety of the client and the animal.

The Citrus County Home Delivered PetMeals Program, sponsored by the Citrus County Home Delivered Meals Program and the Humanitarians of Florida Inc., was born in June of 2003 in an effort to solve these issues.
