Artificial Reef Locations

Citrus County Aquatic Services has been establishing the County’s permitted Artificial Reef site since 1985. Since the inception this location has had 10 deployments and has become a very well established site.

The deployments have consisted of Lincoln Logs, Culverts, Concrete Poles, Boulders, Bridge Material with a total approximation of 10,130 tons of material.

Citrus County is fortunate to have several access points to the artificial reef site. Some locations are the Barge Canal, Fort Island Gulf Beach, Fort Island Gulf Park located in Crystal River, as well as Mac Rae’s located in Homosassa. (coordinates below)

Funding for the development of these reefs is derived from both County tax dollars and State grants. Grant funding is awarded on a competitive basis with emphasis given to reef sites that are frequently utilized.

For fiscal year 2007/2008 Aquatic Services has applied for $60,000.00 through the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, Artificial Reef Program, for assistance in funding a deployment.
